Teething???

Here is a question for all you moms out there...how did you know when your kids started teething? What age were they when it started? What symptoms did they show? And what worked for you to help them with the pain?

I am not sure but I think my sweet Talia may be teething. She usually wakes up so cheery, talking to herself and cooing, blowing bubbles and waiting for the first face she sees to smile at. Well this morning she just started screaming at the top of her lungs at about 5:30am. It is so not like her. We got her calmed down but it took a good 20 min and she would have none of the nursing! It just made her more upset. She seems to be doing better but I am trying to figure out what the distress was all about.

It's been so long since I've had a baby, I forgot when they start teething... I guess 3 months sounds right. I use to give my kids a damp washcloth to chew on, they loved it.

I always gave them Tylenol in the morning and then at night and that helped tons. And they would sleep too. Check her gums, if they are red and swollen then yup. Also is she drooling alot, that is a tell-tell sign.Good luck, teathing turns eve nthe best babies into raging mad, babies.

Yup, that's when Michael stareted, three months. He would never drool, but when he teeths he drools all over the place. Oh & he usually had a fever... so I would do the same as the other girls, tylenol & frozen wash clothes, Michale liked to chew on them. When they get older you can do popcicles too. I can't believe it but he all ready has 16 teeth.

Alex started right at 3 months. Pretty fussy and drooling a lot. He cut the teeth pretty fast - two in two days. I usually use Humphrey's teething pellets (available in the pharmacy at Walmart). They are all natural and if you don't like chemicals it is a great alternative. If you have a cold pack or teething ring or even a cold wash cloth, put it on the gums right before nursing and they won't have as much trouble and will usually nurse like normal. I don't usually use Tylenol unless there is a fever but it does work really well. Alex is teething again and it is really hard, usually the hardest in the mornings and until his nap. I find he sleeps a lot more when he is teething and a few people I have spoken to said that they will use sleep as medicine if you don't give them anything. Not true for everyone but seems to work if you wait a while. I have a vibrating teething ring that is really nice too. I think they sell them at Walmart as well. Good luck!

Sorry! I had some editing difficulties with my comment but here it is:

Cool, that vibrating teething ring sounds great - it probably has a nice numbing effect.

Yes, well, ditto to all above. Hazel starting drooling lakes at 2 months, and cut her first tooth at 4.5 mos. I was so surprised, I just wasn't expecting it! Then she teethed off and on for the next year. I learned through experience and a lot of phone calls to my mom and sisters that teething is such a constant affliction, it's usually the default culprit when Hazel was out of sorts. Ginger had her first teething bout around 3.5 mos but has not cut one yet (now 5 mos old.) That's the tricky thing - they can teethe for a long time before they cut through. But if they are fussy, feverish, drooling, or upset for no good reason it's probably teething pain.

I've used some of the things others mentioned - damp frozen washcloths, tylenol, lots of teething toys. Tylenol really helps at night. Also with Hazel I used Baby Orajel Teething Swabs - they're like q-tips filled with topical pain medication and they work pretty well but it doesn't last long because they lick it off. I haven't tried it with Ginger yet because she had a couple tough days, but it subsided and hasn't happened again. Another thing, when she has good enough motor skills and is eating food, you can put crushed ice, frozen banana or other cold/frozen fruit in a mesh feeder and let her go to town. We gave Ginger some cold watermelon in mesh last week and she LOVED it.

Wow looks like you have tons of great tips. All of them work well but one thing that we used instead of the Orajel was Teething Tablets. My kids did not like the flavor or the orajel so the tablets worked better. They are also homeopathic if you are into that. You can find the just about anywhere. Good Luck.

I didn't realize until the pediatrician explained the process-- but teeth take a long time surface. They start to come down and then retract for awhile before they continue. Hallie is nine months and still hasn't cut a tooth! But, at about five months she was doing the same things you described Talia doing. Just want to say been there-- it happened several times but I haven't experienced it in months.
